New research to study malaria vectors in Africa

Vector Atlas II: Evidence-based mapping to help prioritise scarce vector control resources

Led by Dr Marianne Sinka, and with US$3.3m funding from the Gates Foundation, this international collaborative project will build on the solid foundations of VA I. With a high quality, analyses-ready and comprehensive vector database for Africa now available along with a suite of mosquito vector maps, VA II will develop new models to generate: 

  1. interpretable vector-driven outputs reflecting spatial variation in the likely impact of vector control at continental and national scales.

  2. national epidemiological mapping that accounts for the heterogeneity in vector control, vector species and vector behaviour.

  3. the promotion of vector control impact models for use by external modelling groups so the impact of effective vector control can be better integrated and represented in their models.

We will continue to grow the database to provide data resources for our models and for the wider community and work with country partners and stakeholders to ensure these novel spatial models are accessible and usable, filling in the knowledge gaps that are limiting evidence-based decision making in vector control.
